We are very excited to announce that we will be working with Birmingham City University Level Five BA Illustration students throughout March. Students have been invited work alongside our Associate Artists Humanhood and DeNada Dance Theatre in the DanceXchange studios to coincide with Humanhood’s R&D period with their new company members and DeNada Dance Theatre’s World premiere performance of TORO: Beauty and the Bull, taking place at DanceXchange’s Patrick Studio on 22 March.

Alongside drawing and sketching choreographers and dancers at work, students will have the opportunity to learn about choreographic processes, influences, technique and costume from both companies.

This partnership is a first for DanceXchange.

“Our partnership with the university has developed in very positive ways, we began with an offer to students to visit one company class, but with the University’s enthusiastic support we are now able to offer a full programme of studio visits, two exhibitions and the opportunity to design an exclusive ‘art tote’ for the festival. We can’t wait to see what the students will create.”

As part of the project, students will curate a pop-up exhibition of the work in progress made with DeNada Dance Theatre on 22-23 March in Thorp Street reception, Birmingham Hippodrome for the world premiere of TORO: Beauty and the Bull.

The students will then also present work to a judging panel with the winning design being made into a limited edition tote to be sold exclusively at Birmingham International Dance Festival, which takes place from 1-24 June. Supported by MissionPrint, the bag will be sold alongside an exhibition of finished works featuring both DeNada Dance Theatre and Humanhood in BCU’s Parkside throughout the festival.
